New Microwave Beam Position Monitors for the TESLA Test Facility | FEL
نویسنده
چکیده
Beam-based alignment is essential for the operation of the SASE-FEL at the TESLA Test Facility Linac. In order to ensure the overlap of the photon beam and the electron beam, the position of the electron beam has to be measured along the undulator beamline with a high resolution. Due to the severe space limitations, a new microwave concept is being considered. It is based on special ridged waveguides coupling by small slots to the magnetic eld of the electron beam. The four waveguides and slots of each monitor were split into two symmetric pairs separated in beam direction. All waveguides are about 35 degrees apart in azimuth from the horizontal axis and will be fabricated using electro-discharge machining (EDM). Waveguide-to-coax adaptors were designed to couple the signal of each waveguide into a coaxial cable. The goal is to measure the averaged position of a bunch train in a narrowband receiver with a center frequency of 12 GHz. A prototype of this monitor was built and tested on a testbench, as well as at the CLIC Test Facility at CERN. The paper summarizes the concept, the design, and further improvements of the waveguide monitor.

Cavity-type Beam Position Monitors for the SASE FEL at the TESLA Test Facility
Cavity-type beam position monitors were developed to measure the beam alignment at the undulator section of DESY’s TESLA Test Facility (TTF). This paper describes some theoretical aspects and the experimental setup. The results of some in-beam measurements at the TTF are presented and pros and cons of the monitor concept are discussed.
متن کاملMicrowave Characterization of the Waveguide Bpm
For electron beam orbit observation at the TESLA Test Facility FEL one undulator module will be equipped with ten waveguide-type beam position monitors having a design frequency of 12 GHz. Since the operation of this waveguide BPM is related to microwave concepts, a precise characterization of its microwave behaviour is necessary to describe and optimize the system performance. The purpose of t...
متن کاملReview of Diagnostics for next Generation Linear Accelerators
New electron linac designs incorporate substantial advances in critical beam parameters such as beam loading and bunch length and will require new levels of performance in stability and phase space control. In the coming decade, e(and e+) linacs will be built for a high power linear collider (TESLA, CLIC, JLC/NLC), for fourth generation X-ray sources (TESLA FEL, LCLS, Spring 8 FEL) and for basi...
متن کاملEfficient frequency doubler for the soft X-ray SASE FEL at the TESLA Test Facility
This paper describes an effective frequency doubler scheme for SASE free electron lasers. It consists of an undulator tuned to the first harmonic, a dispersion section, and a tapered undulator tuned to the second harmonic. The first stage is a conventional soft X-ray SASE FEL. Its gain is controlled in such a way that the maximum energy modulation of the electron beam at the exit is about equal...
متن کاملOptimization of Beam Injection into the First Accelerating Module at Ttf with Cavity Dipole Mode Signals
The TESLA Test Facility (TTF) is a user facility for intense VUV-FEL light. The facility is densely equipped with diagnostics, essential in obtaining the necessary beam parameters, in particular the low emittance. However there is no dedicated component for alignment of the beam in the accelerating modules, each containing eight superconducting cavities. Large beam offsets can lead to an increa...
